The answer is Andreas Vesalius. His discoveries and anatomic description, including this classic work of anatomy were the first major challenges to many of the ideas established by Galen. Thus, Galen's ideas had persisted for over 1000 years. Unlike Galen, Vesalius had the advantage of having the ability to dissect human cadavers. He was a Flemish physician who is considered the founder of modern anatomy.
