Caudate is latin for 'tail' or an appendage like a tail. This term is used to describe the caudate nucleus in the brain (which has a long, curving tail and with a 'head' and 'body'), the cauda equina, and the caudate lobe of the liver.

In biologic taxonomy, the caudata order refers to salamanders and newts, which are amphibians (class amphibia) with prominent tails.
